BIM Practitioners Take Note: Multiple Engineering Construction Standards to Take Effect in August 2026

ForBIM practitioners, standards documents may not be consulted frequently in daily work, but their role as a basis is irreplaceable at key points such as project submission for review, completion acceptance and engineering bidding. Around August 2026, multiple national and local standards were released or entered the public consultation stage, directly related to BIM application and worthy of attention.

Recent Standards Developments

Within the past half month, the following standards documents have made key progress:

Shaanxi Province approved and released23 local engineering construction standards, effective from August 22, 2026. Among them, the "Technical Standard for Digital Construction Throughout the Whole Process of Building Engineering" turns digital requirements from principled guidance into assessable specific clauses, covering data management across the entire life cycle of design, construction and operation and maintenance.

In Guangdong Province, the draft for comments of the "Technical Standard for Frame-Type Steel Structure Modular Buildings" was released, with the comment deadline ofAugust 20, 2026. The standard explicitly requires BIM technology to be adapted throughout the whole process, filling the standard gap for special acceptance of modular buildings. Meanwhile, the local standard "Evaluation Standard for Prefabricated Buildings" (No. DB44/T 2861—2026) was officially implemented on August 20, 2026, adjusting the calculation basis for the prefabrication rate.

Regarding association standards, the draft for comments of the "Technical Specification for Green Building Construction Management Based onBIM" was released, with a deadline of August 22, 2026, aiming to promote the connection between BIM models and carbon emission statistical data.

At the national level, the "Unified Code System for Building Construction" (Jianban [2026] No. 32), jointly issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MOHURD) and the National Data Administration, formally incorporates BIM model delivery standards and technical review requirements into the institutional framework.

Analysis of Core Changes

The common feature of the above standards is that the focus has shifted from"whether BIM is adopted" to "at what stage the model is output, to what level of detail, and to which review link it is submitted." The trend of refined rules is evident, and the delivery method of basic model conversion will face higher requirements.

Judging from the release pace and coverage, smart construction is transitioning from pilot demonstration to mandatory implementation. Shaanxi and Guangdong are advancing in parallel, writingBIM requirements into mandatory clauses, and the implementation pace deserves attention.
