Definitions of LOD/LOIN in International Standards and the Specific Technical Delivery Standard for LOD400
By Xiaowei
People who do BIM talk about LOD almost every day: schematic design LOD200, construction drawings LOD300, detailed design LOD400. But few ask: which standard actually defines these LOD numbers? What exactly must be delivered at LOD400? And when an owner invokes ISO 19650, how should LOD400 map to it? This article clarifies once and for all the international standard sources of LOD/LOIN, the Chinese implementation framework, and the specific technical delivery standard for LOD400 based on ISO 19650.
I. The "Birth Certificate" of LOD: The Numerical Scale Originates from US Contracts, Not ISO
The 100–500 numerical scale of LOD (Level of Development) first entered contract documents through the American Institute of Architects (AIA) E202–2008, "Building Information Modeling Protocol Exhibit." It was the first to divide model elements into five tiers by reliability in contractual language: 100 concept, 200 approximate, 300 precise, 400 fabrication, 500 as-built, making "model depth" for the first time a contractually stipulable and accountable clause.
However, the AIA's five-tier definitions were relatively coarse, leaving significant ambiguity when applied element by element. BIMForum therefore responded to industry demand by publishing the first edition of the "Level of Development (LOD) Specification" in 2013, providing detailed interpretation of each tier by element and by system, updated annually; AIA subsequently carried LOD references at the contract level through E203–2013 and G202–2013, forming the American model of "AIA sets the tiers + BIMForum refines them." LOD400 is defined as the fabrication/manufacturing level: model elements are sufficient to support component fabrication, prefabrication, and on-site installation.
It must be emphasized: this numerical scale is a product of the US industry contract system, not an ISO standard.
II. The European and ISO Answer: No Numbers, but "Level of Information Need"
The ISO 19650 series (from 2018 onward) does not adopt LOD numbers but instead uses the framework concept of "level of information need (LOIN)." ISO 19650-1:2018 provides the definition in §3.3.16 and establishes the "minimum sufficient" principle in §11.2—information depth is determined by the minimum amount of information needed to respond to requirements; anything beyond that is waste.
The standard that truly provides the methodology for "how to specify depth clearly" is the European standard EN 17412-1:2020, "BIM—Level of Information Need—Part 1: Concepts and Principles." It breaks information depth into three dimensions: geometric information, alphanumeric information, and documentation; geometric information is further broken into five mutually independent aspects, each with its own value spectrum: Detail (simplified→detailed), Dimensionality (0D/1D/2D/3D), Location (absolute/relative), Appearance (symbolic→realistic), and Parametric behaviour (full/partial/not required). The standard's introduction even explicitly states that "abbreviations should not be used to refer to level of information need, to avoid oversimplification"—deliberately moving away from abbreviated scales like LOD.
ISO 19650-4:2022, in §7.6 when checking the "completeness" of information exchanges, cites EN 17412-1 as the qualitative method. The relationship among the three can be summarized as: ISO 19650 defines concepts and processes, EN 17412-1 defines the prescribed method, and project EIR/BEP/TIDP establish specific values.
This leads to a conclusion that is often misstated and most easily challenged by reviewers: neither ISO 19650 nor EN 17412-1 defines the number LOD400. So-called LOD400 is a specific LOIN value agreed upon in the project's EIR/BEP/TIDP; its management framework is based on ISO 19650, its numerical scale on BIMForum (or China's GB/T 51301), and its prescribed method references EN 17412-1.
III. Chinese Implementation: From LOD to the {G,N} Two-Dimensional System
In China, "model depth" is split into two legs: geometry and information. The national standard GB/T 51301-2018, "Standard for Design Delivery of Building Information Modeling," divides model units into four levels, LOD1.0–4.0 (project level/function level/component level/part level), and allows expansion between basic levels (hence LOD2.5/3.5); prefabricated components typically require LOD3.0 plus N3 production information plus a unique identifier code.
The "Shanghai Building Information Modeling Technology Application Guide (2025 Edition)" (Hu Jian Jian Guan [2025] No. 238) further adopts the {Gn,Nn} two-dimensional system: G1–G4 geometric precision and N1–N4 information depth, where G4 is the manufacturing/fabrication level, N3 is construction/installation plus production information, and N4 is asset plus maintenance information.
Comparing with international frameworks: China's LOD400 (construction/fabrication level) roughly corresponds to G4 geometric precision plus N3–N4 information depth, which—together with EN 17412-1's five geometric aspects taking "fabrication-level" values and alphanumeric attributes carrying production/asset properties—are different expressions of the same thing.
IV. LOD/LOIN 400 Based on ISO 19650: Specific Technical Delivery Standard
With sources and frameworks established, implementation must answer "what exactly is delivered at LOD400." Taking the XXX project, which follows ISO 19650 and Gulf GSO standards, as an example, the technical delivery standard for LOD400 can be summarized in six aspects, each presented in table form.
4.1 Management Framework: Writing LOIN into Contract Documents
ISO 19650-2:2018 requires: the project information standard must include "the method for assigning level of information need" (§5.1.4); the appointing party's EIR determines the level of information need for each information requirement (§5.2.1 b)); the task information delivery plan (TIDP) specifies the level of information need for each information container (§5.4.4); information delivery milestones are linked to key decision points (§5.1.3, ISO 19650-1 §6.3.2). LOD400 is therefore not a verbal commitment but a verifiable clause written into the EIR/BEP/TIDP.
4.2 Six-Discipline LOD400 Modeling Depth
At the LOD400 stage, each discipline models independently and coordinates jointly through the CDE (ISO 19650-2 §5.3.3/§5.1.7). The key modeling depth points for each discipline are as follows:
Discipline | Key LOD400 Modeling Depth Points |
|---|---|
Architecture | Component-level geometry fully defined; family parameters include manufacturer model and thermal performance (U-value/SHGC/VLT); drawings 100% generated from model views |
Structure | Fabrication-level geometry of precast components (G4); reinforcement includes diameter/hook/cover/spacing/count; grout sleeves include positioning coordinates/model/grout material; model directly supplies PC factory cutting lists |
Mechanical | Fitting-level geometry including elbows/tees/reducers/flanges; attributes include flow/pressure/temperature/power; pipeline coordination clash A/B/C classification closed-loop |
Electrical | Equipment families include manufacturer/model/power/voltage/IP rating; PV includes tilt/azimuth/per-panel power/string numbering; circuit and distribution board association tables complete |
Site | Civil 3D shares coordinate datum with architecture; pipes include diameter/slope/burial depth/manhole numbering; site vertical design and ground floor elevation closed-loop |
Wastewater Treatment Plant | Process equipment fabrication-level geometry + complete nameplate parameters; SCADA measurement points correspond one-to-one with CMMS asset metadata |
4.3 Ten Items of Prefabrication (MIC/PC) Detailed Design
For prefabricated projects, the core of LOD400 is the "model detailed design—factory prefabrication—on-site lifting" chain. The ten detailed design items and their outputs are as follows:
No. | Detailed Design Item | Output |
|---|---|---|
1 | Module geometry detailed design | Revit families + module assembly model |
2 | Grout sleeve layout | Sleeve positioning drawings + quantity list |
3 | Embedded reinforcement | Reinforcement detail drawings + hook angles + cover |

4.6 Transition to LOD500
LOD400 is the direct predecessor of the LOD500 as-built model: point cloud scanning verifies model-reality consistency, components carry full asset attributes, COBie asset tables, PIM transferred to AIM (ISO 19650-2 §5.8.1, ISO 19650-3 transfer point B); initiated 8 weeks before completion, with full delivery at acceptance.
V. Three Practical Tips for Peers
First, the contract must clearly specify which scale is adopted (LOD / {G,N} / LOIN aspect spectrum) and the corresponding delivery milestones, to avoid disputes from mixing two systems. Second, external references should not state "LOD400 per ISO 19650" but rather "LOD400 is the agreed LOIN value, with management framework ISO 19650, numerical scale BIMForum/GB-T 51301, and prescribed method EN 17412-1." Third, the acceptance criteria for LOD400 must come down to nine words: "can cut materials, can place orders, can lift"—drawings, lists, and animations are all indispensable.
LOD is not the patent of any single standard but an industry language that has gradually converged from US contracts, to European methodology, to the ISO information management framework. Only by understanding its origins and boundaries can LOD400 be transformed from a slogan into a verifiable, deliverable, and accountable technical standard.
