Inaugural Conference of the Digital Archives Branch of the Shanghai BIM Technology Association and the Building Data Archiving and Assetization Forum Successfully Held

On January 17, 2025, the Inaugural Meeting of the Digital Archives Branch of the Shanghai BIM Technology Association, held together with the Construction Industry Sub-forum of the 'Empowering Shanghai' Innovation Conference Industry Forum - the Building Data Archiving and Assetization Forum - was successfully convened at Shanghai Construction No. 4 Group. The conference aimed to advance research on the digitalization of urban construction archives, support the in-depth application of BIM, and leverage the 'chain leader' advantages of Shanghai Construction Group to drive the digital transformation of the construction industry and support smart city development.

   

The meeting was chaired by Dai Xiaojian, Standing Committee Member of the Shanghai Association for Science and Technology and President of the Shanghai BIM Technology Association. More than 100 leaders and guests attended, including Liu Qianwei, Chief Engineer of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development; Zhou Jun, Vice President of Shanghai Construction Group Co., Ltd.; and Wu Shimin, Director of the Archives Bureau of Pudong New Area, Shanghai.

Chief Engineer Liu Qianwei, Vice President Zhou Jun, and Director Wu Shimin each addressed the conference and jointly congratulated the establishment of the Digital Archives Branch. They emphasized the importance and urgency of BIM archive delivery and assetization for the digital transformation of buildings and cities, and expressed hope that the Digital Archives Branch would unite industry, academia, and research to explore innovative technologies and application results through the deep integration of BIM and digital archives, provide experience for the digital transformation of urban construction archives, and drive the high-quality development of the industry.


Organizational structure of the Digital Archives Branch  

               

         Yu Fangqiang, Chief Information Officer of Shanghai Construction Group Co., Ltd., introduced the preparations for the Digital Archives Branch and expounded on the industry background, social significance, and current status of the digitalization of urban construction archives, as well as the organizational structure and the future work goals and tasks of the branch.He also called on more industry peers to take part in the work of the Digital Archives Branch and jointly advance the research and application of technologies such as BIM archiving and assetization, digital archive management and application, and BIM delivery and smart building O&M.

  
A research achievement in BIM delivery and smart O&M technology - the book Digital Twin-Based Smart O&M Technology and Systems for Hospital Buildings - was launched at this conference. Pei Zhen, Vice President of the Shanghai BIM Technology Association and General Manager of the Information Management Department of Shanghai Construction Group Co., Ltd., together with Zhang Ming, Vice President and Chief Engineer of Shanghai Construction No. 4 Group Co., Ltd., jointly unveiled the book at its launch ceremony.

Subsequently, Chief Engineer Liu Qianwei and Vice President Zhou Jun unveiled the plaque for the Digital Archives Branch.

          


Building Data Archiving and Assetization Forum

The Building Data Archiving and Assetization Forum was then held, during which the participating experts and scholars engaged in in-depth discussion and exchange on the topic.    

Zhang Jiantang, Vice President and Secretary-General of the Shanghai BIM Technology Association, delivered a report titled 'Inheritance and Innovation: The Historical Responsibility and Future Mission of Urban Construction Archives.' He discussed the historical responsibility and future development mission of urban construction archives and explored new developments in urban construction archives in the BIM era, emphasizing that BIM archives, as an advanced form of digital archives, are bound to become an important trend for future urban construction archives.

   

Qiu Chunhua, Deputy Director of the Digital Construction Research Center of the Engineering Research Institute of Shanghai Construction No. 4 Group, introduced the drafting of the Acceptance Standard for Building Information Model As-Built Archives in Pudong New Area (Draft for Comments). He explained the current problems in the archiving of BIM as-built archives and the objectives of drafting the standard, which is now open for wide consultation.

Zhu Chenda, Director of the Building Operations Department of the Operations and Support Division of the Shanghai Library, delivereda report titled 'The Value of Digital Archive Delivery for the O&M and Renovation of Complex Buildings.' Drawing on the experience of construction, handover, and BIM work in the Shanghai Library East Branch project, he explained the necessity of digital archive delivery for such large and complex public buildings and put forward three requirements to be observed during digital archive delivery, namely a verification mechanism for consistency, safeguards for dynamic data, and the promotion of subsequent applications.
Xu Jinglin, Director of the Digital Construction Research Center of the Engineering Research Institute of Shanghai Construction No. 4 Group, delivered a report titled 'Smart O&M of Museums and the Exploration and Practice of Building Data Assets.' The report shared practical experience in the full-life-cycle digital management of museum projects and the CECS standard Delivery Standard for O&M Models of Museum Exhibition Halls, drafted under Xu's leadership on that basis. It also introduced the exploration and practice of how building data becomes data assets, as well as the data products, data intellectual property, and other achievements formed by Shanghai No. 4 Construction in related fields.

          

The successful convening of this conference has injected new vitality into the digital transformation of the construction industry. The participating organizations and experts actively stated that they would eagerly take part in the work of the Digital Archives Branch, jointly advance the archiving and assetization of building data, and accelerate the digitalization of urban construction archives.
