BIM Technology Forges New Quality Productive Forces and Empowers New Momentum for Urban Construction and Management! The 2024 Shanghai BIM Technology Application and Development Forum Concludes Successfully

The “2024 Shanghai BIM Technology Application and Development Forum and Launch of the Report on the Application and Development of Building Information Modeling Technology in Shanghai (2024)”, jointly hosted by the Shanghai Green Building Association and the Shanghai Building Information Model Technology Application and Promotion Center, was successfully held in Shanghai on August 28, 2024. The forum aimed to showcase Shanghai's latest advances in the application and development of building information modeling (BIM) technology and to provide a platform for exchange and cooperation for professionals from within and outside the industry. 
The award ceremony of the 6th Shanghai BIM Technology Application Innovation Competition was also held at the event. This edition of the competition featured three categories: the Project Case Award (building construction and municipal categories), the Special Creativity Award, and the Outstanding Individual Award.
Among them, Shanghai Zhuwei Architectural Technology Co., Ltd. submitted the Zhangjiabang Wedge Green Space Plot C2d-03 Welfare Home and Plot C2d-04 Community Health Service Center Project, which at the 6th Shanghai BIM Technology Application Innovation Competition won the Building Construction Project Case Third Prize.
Forum Opening
The theme of this forum was “BIM Technology Forges New Quality Productive Forces, Empowering New Momentum for Urban Construction and Management”, aiming to summarize the current status of BIM technology application in Shanghai, share successful cases, and explore future development directions.
The meeting was chaired by Cui Minghua, President of the Shanghai Green Building Association and Director of the Center. Academician Guo Renzhong of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and other experts delivered keynote speeches at the forum. In his address, Wu Luyang, Second-Level Inspector of the Department of Standards and Quotas of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, emphasized the importance of urban digital transformation and affirmed Shanghai's exemplary and leading role in the digital transformation of the housing and urban-rural development sector. Pei Xiao, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, introduced the Implementation Opinions of Shanghai Municipality on Comprehensively Advancing the In-Depth Application of Building Information Modeling Technology and the Implementation Plan for the Digital Transformation of Shanghai's Housing and Urban-Rural Development Sector (2024–2026), making it clear that by 2026, Shanghai will basically establish the “4321” overall framework of “Digital Housing and Construction”, preliminarily realizing a development pattern in the housing and construction sector that is horizontally integrated, vertically connected, and effectively coordinated through “IoT + data linkage + smart linkage”, together outlining the future blueprint of Shanghai's “Digital Housing and Construction”.
Report Release
The Report on the Application and Development of Building Information Modeling Technology in Shanghai (2024), commissioned by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and compiled by the Shanghai BIM Promotion Center, was released at the event. Shen Honghua, Second-Level Inspector of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, unveiled the report, and Division Director Ma Yan of the Commission interpreted the report, providing a comprehensive analysis of the current application status and future development trends of BIM technology in the construction industry.
The report points out that in 2023, Shanghai had 6711 newly registered projects, of which 1381 were above-scale projects, and the number of projects applying BIM technology reached 1170. The BIM application rate among above-scale projects was as high as 94.77%, compared with 2022, an increase of 0.19%.These figures show that the application of BIM technology is expanding from the project and enterprise levels to the regional and city levels, becoming an important force driving the digital transformation of the construction industry.
Keynote Speeches on BIM Technology Application
The forum also invited experts to draw on their own practice and share how BIM technology empowers urban construction and operations and improves efficiency:
Academician Guo Renzhong of the Chinese Academy of Engineering delivered a speech titled “Digital Twin Cities: Engineering Logic and Technology Requirements”;
Shen Weiqiang, Chief Engineer of Shanghai Shentong Metro Group, gave a speech titled “3D Digital Technologies Boosting Quality Improvement of the Shanghai Metro”;
Sun Canglong, Party Committee Secretary and Chairman of Shanghai Lingang New Area Economic Development Co., Ltd., gave a speech titled “Digitalization Empowering the Ring of Glory in Lingang”:

Zhang Qingkun, General Manager of Tencent Cloud Technology Co., Ltd. Shanghai Region, gave a speech titled “Digital-Physical Integration — Empowering a New Vision for the Development of the Housing and Construction Industry”;

Zhang Xin, Deputy Chief Engineer of Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute (Group) Co., Ltd., gave a speech titled “Exploring the Construction and Application of the Digital-Intelligent Drainage System”;

The award ceremony was chaired by Zheng Zhimin, Deputy Party Committee Secretary and President of Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute (Group) Co., Ltd.

Wang Shuo, BIM Director of the Second Branch of China Construction Eighth Engineering Division Shanghai Company, and Wu Qi, Overall BIM Lead of the Shanghai Grand Theatre project, delivered acceptance speeches on behalf of the award-winning organizations, sharing their reflections on the competition and insights into the application and development of BIM technology.

Significance of the Forum

This forum also received strong support from Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute (Group) Co., Ltd., Shanghai Construction No. 1 (Group) Co., Ltd., Arcplus Group Shanghai Institute of Architectural Design and Research Co., Ltd., Shanghai Urban Construction Information Technology Co., Ltd. (under Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd.), Shanghai Lingang New Area Economic Development Co., Ltd., Shanghai Tunnel Engineering and Rail Transit Design and Research Institute, Luban Software Co., Ltd., and other organizations.
This forum was not only a platform for showcasing BIM technology applications but also a bridge for industry exchange and cooperation. Through sharing and discussion, participants gained a deeper understanding of the application of BIM technology in the construction industry, while new ideas were provided for promoting the information-based transformation and upgrading of the construction industry. As BIM technology continues to mature and be applied, we have every reason to believe that it will play an increasingly important role in future urban construction and management, bringing cities a smarter, more efficient, and greener new look.
