A New Approach to Forward BIM Design: "Translating" Design Codes into Code Logic

WeChat Sync · Xiaowei · 2024-01-29

In the architectural design field, the development of digital technologies has promoted the wide application of Building Information Modeling (BIM).As a digital solution for architectural design, construction and O&M, BIM technology has become a core technology of the industry. However, in the current extensive practice of BIM applications, we believe that the core of BIM forward design is still the logic of design, which requires “translating” design standards into code logic, while “3D” is a front-end display means of design. This article will explore new ideas for BIM forward design, with a view to promoting the continuous progress of industry technology.

I. The Core of BIM Design Is Still Design

In the traditional architectural design process, architects usually need to consult a large number of design standards and, combined with their own design experience, carry out the design manually. However, as building scales become increasingly complex, the efficiency and accuracy of manual design face huge challenges. Therefore, in the application of BIM technology, we need to attach importance to the research and application of design logic.

Design logic is the core way of thinking in the architectural design process; it involves comprehensive consideration of many factors such as building function, structure, materials and construction. Through in-depth research on design logic, we can better understand the connotation of architectural design standards and transform them into code logic executable by computers, thereby achieving automated design.

II. Translating Design Standards

In order to realize the automated application of design standards, we need to “translate” design standards into code logic. This process includes the following aspects:

  • Standard parsing:Conduct in-depth research on design standards, understand the logic and principles behind them, and distill rules suitable for computer processing.

  • Rule abstraction:Abstract the specific requirements in the standards into rules understandable by computers, for example, converting the dimensional requirements in a building code into mathematical expressions.

  • Rule coding:Write the abstracted rules into code using computer programming languages, so as to realize automated design in BIM software.

  • Rule updating:As design standards are updated and revised, the rules applied to BIM need to be updated in a timely manner to ensure that the design complies with the latest requirements.

Through the translation of design standards, we can apply the experience and standards from manual design into BIM software, realizing the automation and standardization of the design process.

III. 3D as the Front-end Display Means of Design

In the application of BIM technology, 3D modeling is an intuitive form of design presentation. However, we believe that 3D is not the core of design but rather a front-end display means of design. Through 3D modeling, we can intuitively present design results and facilitate communication and collaboration among all participants. In fact, design logic is the core of BIM forward design.

In order to better realize the application of design logic in 3D modeling, we need to focus on the following aspects:

Multi-dimensional modeling: In BIM software, in addition to 3D modeling, it is also necessary to focus on modeling information in other dimensions, such as time and cost, so as to present design results more comprehensively.

Parametric design:Through parametric design, we can realize the dynamic adjustment of design rules and logic in 3D modeling, thereby improving the flexibility and controllability of the design.

Model verification:During the 3D modeling process, the model must undergo continuous verification to ensure that it complies with design standards and requirements, so as to reduce the risk of later design modifications.
Design collaboration:The application of BIM technology has changed the relationships among participants in the traditional architectural design process and promoted design collaboration. Therefore, in the 3D modeling process, attention should be paid to communication and collaboration among all participants to improve the efficiency and quality of the design.

IV. Conclusion

The core of the new idea for BIM forward design lies in the research and application of design logic, as well as the translation of design standards, so as to realize the automation and standardization of the architectural design process. In this process, 3D modeling, as a front-end display means of design, provides convenience for presenting design results and for communication among participants.

With the continuous development of digital technology, we have reason to believe that BIM technology will continue to drive the transformation of the architectural design field and promote innovation in design concepts and methods. To achieve this goal, we need to further strengthen research on design logic and standards translation and continuously improve the effectiveness of BIM technology in practical applications.
